HLINks - Are you missing out on the Housing LIN weekly update?

#Jeremytalks

Welcome to #Jeremytalks and our must-read weekly bulletin, HLINks, week-ending Friday, 4th June 2021.

This week we published a new Housing LIN case study on Octavia housing association's End of Life Care in extra care housing project with partner St Christopher's Hospice. And, in our first HAPPI Hour session of the month, we heard from the partners about their Better Care, Better Endings project at yesterday afternoon's HAPPI Hour webinar. We were also joined by speakers from NHS England's Anticipatory Care team on the forthcoming community health framework and ADASS’ housing policy co-chair exploring how to better engage and integrate with housing. Check out this session and our exciting June programme on our Forthcoming Events webpage. Register now!

We also released a guest blog by Matter Architectures' Roland Karthaus on the ethos of care prompted by last month's The Regeneration Game HAPPI Hour and the presentation by Igloo Regeneration's John Nordon.

You can also take a tour of other news and events on later life housing and independent living with regard to homes and communities, health and social care, design and technology, planning matters and more. For example, we highlight a range of items that we think will be of interest to you, including a new report by King’s College London that offers a pre-Covid snapshot of day centres in south London and a survey by the IMPACT project that the Housing LIN is associated with at the University of Birmingham in which they want to get your views of anyone connected with or working in adult social care.

Keep up-to-date with the latest housing and care themes and register here to receive other notifications on topics that matter to you sent direct to your inbox. And remember you can also follow us via our Twitter feeds: @HousingLIN,  @HousingLINews and @HLINConsult

Lastly, if you would like to talk to us about any matters highlighted in this week’s issue, share learning about your work and/or discuss how you can engage our highly regarded consultancy services to support you, email ‘Jeremy talks’ at: info@housinglin.org.uk

NEW Housing LIN Case Study: Better Lives, Better Endings

Cover Better lives better endings

We are pleased to showcase a new Housing LIN case study (No 162) featuring a project undertaken in partnership between Octavia housing association and St Christopher’s Hospice. The aim was to encourage an inclusive and proactive approach to planning the end-of-life care for everyone involved. Early findings and Covid-19 adaptions to the project disclosed what might be done better to ensure the best possible end-of-life for residents living in Octavia’s extra care housing schemes.

NEW Housing LIN guest blog: From care-free to care-ful housing with social purpose

Roland Karthaus

We are pleased to share with you our most recent guest blog titled ‘From care-free to care-ful with social purpose’ written by Roland Karthaus from Matter Architecture. Housing-with-care needs care in its development as well as in its operation, to cater for quality of life.

But the government’s current planning reforms appear to have paved the way for quantity over quality of housing. Roland asks if and how we should rely less on mandates and more on encouraging care in the way housing is developed by building trust between organisations around a shared ethos of caring about what we do and what happens as a result.

Have your say - older people from ethnic minorities housing needs and perceptions study

The Housing LIN has also been commissioned by Kirklees Council to conduct a study into the housing needs and preferences of older people from ethnic minorities living in Kirklees. This research will make sure that the Council has the evidence necessary to plan for homes that meet the needs of all communities.

If you are able to help with this research by identifying individuals living in Kirklees to take part in this research, or would like to learn more, please email research@housinglin.org.uk

Do you know someone over 70 and helping a partner living with dementia at home? Do they use a day centre and/or have outside support before the COVID-19 pandemic began? Yes? Then please tell the research team about their experiences during the pandemic in a telephone interview.

The University of Manchester are looking for older carers (70) of people living with dementia who might be prepared to take part in a telephone interview as part of a research programme. The University is being supported by tide charity (together in dementia everyday) to do research into the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on people who previously used a day centre or had outside support before the pandemic. They are particularly keen to involve this group of people as they haven’t been represented in previous similar research. Please contact the researcher to find out more by emailing: jayne.astbury@Manchester.ac.uk
