SHAPE Away Day logo thumb 200

Members of the SHAPE Advisory Group came together in Birmingham on 12–13 October for their first in-person Away Day, bringing together expertise from across housing, health, social care and related sectors to help shape the next phase of the programme.

The two-day session provided an opportunity to take stock of progress so far, look ahead to what SHAPE could achieve over the coming years, and consider how the Advisory Group can best use its collective expertise, networks and influence to support the programme.

Read more about the programme in this new guest blog from Advisory Group Chair, Professor Rose Gilroy: The time to act is now – get into shape.

Find out more at our webinar on Tuesday 27th October, when we launch the SHAPE Challenge Fund. Book your place now.

The adaptability gap: Public perceptions of UK homes in 2026

A new Habinteg survey has found that one in five UK adults report that they or a family member experienced outcomes such as a delayed hospital discharge or a move into residential care, because a home could not meet their accessibility needs. 'The adaptability gap: Public perceptions of UK homes in 2026' reports that worry about the suitability of future housing is highest among people who have previously experienced or witnessed the impact of inaccessible homes, and uses data from the survey to estimate the substantial cost to the NHS.

The rent can’t wait: The impact of the Local Housing Allowance freeze on older private renters

An Independent Age briefing exposes the human cost of freezing Local Housing Allowance rates since April 2024. While market rents have soared, nearly seven in ten pension-age renters receiving Housing Benefit face a shortfall between their rent and the support they receive, forcing them to cut back on essentials like heating and food, leaving them stuck in unsafe or deteriorating conditions, and fearing the prospect of homelessness.
