HLINks: New HLIN blog, RIBA Stirling Prize, new resources, and news from the specialist housing sector.

Housing LIN Blog

Analogue to Digital Switch Over

By 2025 the UK will be switching off its analogue Public Switch Telephone Network and moving to an all-digital network powered by mobile phone technology.

Chris Dodd, Managing Director at Legrand Assisted Living & Healthcare, has written a guest blog for the Housing LIN examining what this change will mean for service providers, what advantages it will bring, and how providers should be planning for this transition.

Housing LIN Survey

Have your say - Growing housing with care: an in-depth sector survey

The Housing LIN has joined forces with EAC (Elderly Accommodation Counsel) to measure the sector’s appetite for, and interest in, housing with care. We know that there is a significant shortfall of provision, recently estimated at 30,000 units per annum, against latent demand. How is the sector responding?

Take part in our survey and let us know your organisation’s intentions for growth in scheme development and/or in the delivery of care and support services over the next 5 years.

World Homeless Day

Housing LIN Homelessness Resources

Yesterday (10th October) was World Homeless Day. People who are homeless experience a poor quality of life and multiple problems affecting their health and wellbeing. Older homeless people experience the combined difficulties of increasing frailty and lack of access to a settled home, health and social care.

The Housing LIN website features resources relating to homelessness on our Older Homeless People topic page.

In August, following a presentation at a Housing LIN Midlands regional meeting, we published a case study looking at an almshouse scheme for homeless people in Worcester.

RIBA Stirling Prize 2019

This week saw the announcement of the winner of the 2019 RIBA Stirling Prize. Goldsmith Street in Norwich, by Mikhail Riches with Cathy Hawley, was described the judges as a “modest masterpiece”. This is the first time that the award has gone to a social housing project. Goldsmith Street was also the overall winner of the 2019 Housing Design Awards, and you can see a short video about the scheme on their website.

Over on Twitter there was an alternative Stirling Prize vote, which was awarded to Marmalade Lane cohousing scheme in Cambridge. Jan Chadwick, the chair of K1 cohousing, wrote a blog for the Housing LIN about the development.
