HLINks: Dementia best practice case studies, new resources, and news from the housing sector

We have a bumper edition of HLINks this week, our last edition until September. At the beginning of this week we published our compendium of case studies on best practice in dementia care. Later in the week we published an updated reading list to accompany last year's Age-Friendly Housing, published by RIBA. Alongside these we also have our usual new resources, news, and events.

Dementia Care Best Practice

Going the Extra Step: A compendium of best practice in dementia care

We used this year’s Dementia Action Week 2019 to gather and share examples of extra care schemes and other housing related community services supporting people with dementia to develop meaningful relationships.

This compendium brings those examples together in one place, along with further examples of best practice that we received. Colleagues also told us about the fantastic work they were doing as Dementia Friendly organisations, and we have included a section of those examples as well.

Age-Friendly Housing

Updated Reading List

Cover Age-Friendly Housing 160

The Housing LIN has published the third edition of the reading list for Age-Friendly Housing published by RIBA.

Published in July 2018, by RIBA, Age-Friendly Housing was co-written by Julia Park, Levitt Bernstein and the Housing LIN's Jeremy Porteus.

The reading list contains a wealth of resources (available on the Housing LIN's website) relating to the planning and design of housing for our ageing population.

Housing LIN Videos

Help Us to Fund our New Video Series

Over the last two years, the Housing LIN has produced a series of highly-praised videos that put the Spotlight on Extra Care Housing.

Thanks to the support of our network, we were able to visit dozens of locations around the country and share the perspectives of some of the people who design, build, manage, work at and – most importantly – live in these schemes.

Now, we need your help to create our new video series. We want you to help with deciding which areas to focus on, where to film, and raising up to £60k to make housing with care go viral.

The deadline for submissions is 31st August. Visit our Crowdfunding page to find out more about how you can help us.

Housing and Older People

Just Living

People are living longer, demanding more housing choices, and seeking more lifestyle options in later life.

ColladoCollins has gathered research and insights from older people and leaders in the sector to create Just Living, a narrative around the choices and considerations at stake when designing and developing homes for our future selves.

Housing Disrepair: Improving non-decent homes

The quality and suitability of a person’s home has a significant effect on their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

This new guide from Care and Repair offers practical information and advice for local older people’s forums and groups who  want to influence local policy, plans and actions in relation to housing and older people.

Championing the Voices of Older People in Greater Manchester: A Guide to Participation

This Guide to Participation is a report based on the findings of the Greater Manchester Older People's Network events held in Leigh and central Manchester, in May 2019.

This report and these recommendations will be used to inform future participation opportunities delivered by the GMOPN. It is also of use to organisations wanting to ensure that people are engaged with on their own terms and in a meaningful way.

Digital Inclusion Guide for Health and Care in Wales

Overall, 11 per cent of adults in Wales are not online, but some sections of the population are more at risk of digital exclusion than others. This includes older people, those with a disability or long-term health issues and people with less access to education.

This report is aimed at health and social care organisations and includes practical advice on how to support digital inclusion at a local level.
