Description of Scheme
The scheme caters for young adults with severe complex learning difficulties and disabilities. It consists of 6 one bedroom flats as well as providing an office and overnight room for 24 hour support from a Care Provider.
Tunstall telecare system is also installed and any individual equipment is tailored to individual Residents needs (assessed and provided via LBH).
One of the key aims of the support provided to the individuals that live within the scheme is to enable and greater support community access and participation. Tenants will be encouraged to undertake course at local colleges, access local gym's and leisure facilities, visit local restaurants and public houses and other public resources such as Libraries and social groups. They will be supported to actively participate in community social events and groups and live as active members of their neighbourhood.
Tenants will be supported to shop locally and support local businesses, to maintain community contact.
Tenants living within the scheme will be supported to reach and attain the maximum independence in their lives which will include learning and teaching skills to enable them to seek employment. Tenants will be supported to apply for local jobs and employment opportunities in order to gain greater ability to care for and provide for themselves.
Tenants will also be supported and encouraged to volunteer at local shops, businesses or social/leisure clubs, as part of their personal development and their journey towards being ready for employment as well as to widen their social network and community living.
Where Is It?
This scheme is located in Cowley, a village that neighbours the town of Uxbridge in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The surrounding area mostly consists of 1950s family housing with the exception of Brunel University which is located to the rear of the scheme.

Relevant Local Strategy
The Disabilities Commissioning Plan 2011-2015 outlines the importance of the provision of good quality housing and support services in enabling more disabled people to have greater independence in the community. Currently people with learning disabilities who have complex needs and challenging behaviour have to be placed outside of the borough to costly residential care services because there is no supported housing provision that is available to address these needs within the borough, or continue to live with parents which is an unsustainable situation.
The aims and objectives of the Valuing People Paper set out by the government in relation to their long term strategy to enable individuals with disabilities to have the same opportunities and rights to community services and housing.
Supported living tenancies enable the London Borough of Hillingdon to provide bespoke support packages within afford community housing for individuals in their own homes, under the personalisation agenda and enabling better use of personal budgets for the future.
