HLINks: Future Leaders Network, HAPPI 5, new resources, and news from the housing sector

This week saw the first session of the Housing LIN Future Leaders Network programme; the APPG on Housing and Care for Older People published the latest report in the HAPPI series; and we have new resources, and news from the housing with care and specialist housing sectors.

Future Leaders Network

First Future Leaders Network session

This week the Housing LIN held the first session in its Future Leaders Network programme, a collaborative and dynamic community of early career individuals.

Sponsored by Thirteen Group, the free network is fostered by a programme of events that provide the opportunity to meet key industry leaders, and to produce and present a cooperative project and share their learning at the 2020 Annual Housing LIN Conference in March.

Remodelling Case Study

Call for submissions

Following Jeremy Porteus' blog 'Remake, Remodel', the Housing LIN is publishing a case study featuring examples of best practice in remodelling and/or repurposing existing stock as housing for older people.

If you would like to share examples of best practice from you organisation, please send details, along with any accompanying diagrams and/or images, to info@housinglin.org.uk by Monday, 29 July.

Housing for Older People

Rental Housing for an Ageing Population (HAPPI 5)

Over recent years the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Housing and Care for Older People has looked at the housing needs and opportunities for older people, producing a series of Inquiry reports on Housing for an Ageing Population, known as HAPPI.

Because the great majority of those over pension age are owner-occupiers (including leaseholders), previous reports have concentrated on the people in this tenure.

Homeowners have the advantage of some equity in their property – a lot in some areas, not much in other places – and this can be used to pay for a “rightsizing” move or for making their current home more comfortable. In this report the inquiry considered those older people who are tenants, renting in either the social or private rented sector (PRS).

A Home for the Ages

This report makes the case for tackling the current shortage of housing suitable to meet the needs of an ageing population.

The report includes data provided by the Centre for Towns showing which places are getting oldest fastest, alongside survey data from ComRes identifying preferences of over 55s in the housing market.
