With a contribution by the Housing LIN, this new guide published by The Urban Land Institute sets out examples of innovative practice within the emerging later living sector for funders, developers, architects, and operators.

It provides a number of key messages for the sector, including:

  • The growth in the real estate sector - highlighting the potential of Later Living to be the next residential asset class following the success of the emergence of recent sectors including Build-To-Rent and student accommodation
  • How Later Living can help solve the care crisis - How Later Living can address the need for more significant provision of housing with care for older generations, which could alleviate pressure on public services like the NHS
  • The need for long-term planning and legislation - Explore the necessity for precise legislation and planning guidelines that apply specifically to organisations that build and operate housing with care developments will be needed to meet the demand of an ageing population
  • Creating aspirational places for the elderly - How combining design principles with activities, enlivening initiatives and staff training is vital to creating aspirational places to live in environments where residents feel happy and supported.
