News Highlights

Second APPG Inquiry session explores intergenerational living at the House of Lords

Last week, as the proud Secretariat supporting the APPG for Housing and Care for Older People’s inquiry into intergenerational living, we were pleased to attend the second Inquiry session at the House of Lords, London.

The session focused on integrating different age groups within the same housing developments, including in New Towns and major public sector regeneration projects.

Government publishes 10 Year Health Plan for England

This new '10 Year Health Plan for England' is part of the government’s health mission to build a health service fit for the future.  

The plan puts an emphasis on 3 priority areas: namely, from hospital to community, from analogue to digital and from sickness to prevention.

Government publishes plan for delivering a decade of renewal for social and affordable housing

In the same week that marked the release of the government’s 10 year NHS Plan, a long-term housing strategy was also unveiled. This plan outlines a renewed commitment to increasing the supply of social and affordable housing, alongside a range of measures aimed at improving housing standards, including extending decent homes.

Publication of the Telecare National Action Plan

With a growing emphasis on analogue to digital, the Department of Health and Social Care is seeking case studies and examples of best practice from housing providers that have upgraded their telecare systems in preparation for the switchover.

These examples will inform the next update of the Telecare National Action Plan, helping demonstrate the range of effective approaches being used across the UK.

Parliamentary Committee hears oral evidence on Housing for Older People

On 1 July 2025, the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee held a one-off evidence session exploring later-life housing options.

Expert witnesses, including Professor Julienne Meyer, discussed models such as Older Persons Shared Ownership and park homes.

Loneliness is a public health crisis - and ‘neighbourisms’ should be part of the cure

In this Viewpoint (no. 111), Savannah Fishel draws on her Churchill Fellowship research into 54 communal housing models to argue that loneliness should be treated as a serious health crisis, one that demands a preventative, community-focused response.

After giving evidence to the APPG for Housing and Care for Older People’s inquiry into intergenerational living, she introduces "neighbourisms", everyday acts of mutual support in intergenerational living, which reduce isolation and improve health outcomes.

Last week was the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE)’s Co-production Week 2025, a celebration of the power of co-production to design and develop better ways of doing things in social care.

A Housing led Vision for Proactive Care: Powered by Independent Living as a Service

This briefing by Tunstall Healthcare sets out a housing-led vision for independent living as a service, anchored in the government’s regulatory reform of supported housing, and designed to meet the practical needs of commissioners, housing providers, and system leaders.

It calls for a new model for delivering proactive, preventative, and person-centred support through housing.
