Breaking the Mold: Learning That My Path Still Counts

As this year’s Housing LIN Future Leaders programme comes to an end, I have found myself reflecting on a journey that became far more personal than I ever anticipated.

When I joined the housing sector after 17 years in the public sector, it felt like pressing reset on everything I thought I knew about myself professionally. I was proud of the career I had built, but stepping into a completely new field made me feel like I was starting again. I questioned whether the experiences I carried with me had any real place in this new chapter.

Layered onto that was something I have carried quietly for years, the feeling of never quite being good enough. Not having a degree. Not having the “typical” leadership story. Walking into that first Future Leaders session, I genuinely wondered if I would stand out for all the wrong reasons. I felt vulnerable and unsure of myself, like an impostor trying not to be noticed.

But as the programme unfolded, everything began to shift.

The turning point came from the inspirational leaders we met along the way. One after another, they joined us and shared not just their achievements, but the truth behind them. The setbacks, the uncertainty, the changes in direction, the unexpected moments that shaped who they became. What surprised me most was how many came from backgrounds just as varied, unconventional, and unpolished as mine. Different sectors, different starts, different routes. Some with degrees, many without. All of them proving, in their own way that leadership is not defined by one path.

Their honesty was refreshing. It helped me see the value that I bring, the years in public service, the empathy, the curiosity, the commitment to improving people’s lives is not just relevant but genuinely needed.

Then there was the cohort itself. A room full of strangers who very quickly became a source of encouragement and understanding. We were not just learning together; we were growing together, sharing breakthroughs, new perspectives, and the realisation that leadership is as much about who we are as what we know.

I leave this programme with a clearer sense of the leader I want to become. One shaped by lived experience, resilience, and a deep desire to improve outcomes for the people we serve.

And for the first time, my story and my leadership have a rightful place in this sector.
