Welcome to TAPPI Cast, our weekly update on the 'Technology for our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation' (TAPPI) project which aims to improve the way technology is used in housing and care for older people. Includes updates from our 6 Testbeds, Resources and Events of interest.
Last week, we were delighted to publish 3 New Personal Stories by the TAPPI Champions. They cover the positives and negatives of digital technology and how it affects their lives:
Paul, Tenant at Southend Care, sharing his inspiring story and reveals how the technology he uses supports him to live independently. - Steven, Assistant Manager at Southend Care who shares how he feels about technology and reflects on the work he's been doing through the TAPPI programme.
- JP, Care Worker at Wiltshire Council who explains how he uses technology and the opportunities associated with it.
And, in order to encourage and help you write such stories, we also shared 10 top tips for creating authentic Personal Stories.
Updates from our Testbeds:
A new digital games table has arrived at Dairy View for the communal area. Residents have been enjoying some of their old favourite games plus learning some new ones.
Kerry, a resident pictured, meets with fellow resident and friend Mark in the afternoons to learn and play new digital games.
“Kerry showed me how it worked and was happy to share her knowledge of what she had learnt so far and enjoyed getting out of her room and learning new things. Kerry also confirmed that up to 12 people can play monopoly of the table, you just need to find the space to fit everyone around it.“
Katie, Assistant Housing Manager commented:
“The digital games table is brilliant for those residents who have vision concerns as it is big and bright, the sound is vibrant and loud and those residents with hand dexterity concerns, you can electronically roll the dice. It’s also very handy as you cannot lose any tiny pieces.”
Earlier this year, Bield Housing and Care officially launched a digital hub in Linlithgow. Securing £75k in funding from the TAPPI project, it set about showcasing a variety of preventative care technologies that aim to support individuals to live independently, in their own homes, for longer.
Bield also hopes the hub will act as a blueprint and trial centre for housing of the future, with the new care technologies available for tenants, staff and other stakeholders to trial.
To discuss the hub and the future of tech and care, Dr Lynn Douglas and Gary Baillie took part in The Scottish Housing News Podcast.
Also, this week, Gary spoke at the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations TEC Housing conference on their analogue to digital journey within housing and care, putting the tenant at the heart of the journey.
