From Managing Crisis to Investing in People: Rethinking How We Help People Live Well
For many years, conversations about adult social care have been dominated by crisis. How do we respond when someone reaches a point of need? How do we manage increasing demand? How do we find capacity in increasingly stretched systems?
These are important questions, but they are not the only questions we should be asking.
Through our Reimagining Living Spaces work, we stepped back from systems and services and focused instead on people. We wanted to understand what helps individuals not simply cope, but truly live well as they age. By listening to residents, communities and partners, we explored what creates the conditions for healthier, happier and more connected lives.
The work did not emerge in isolation. It grew from years of learning alongside residents through Age Friendly Salford (opens new window), place-based approaches including Live Well Neighbourhoods, community-led housing through Inspiring Housing Community Land Trust (opens new window), and community development through Inspiring Communities Together (opens new window). Again and again, we heard the same message: people wanted to remain connected to the places, relationships and communities that matter most to them.
The conversations were revealing. People rarely spoke first about care services. They spoke about connection, purpose, belonging, friendship, independence and opportunities to contribute. Above all, they spoke about the importance of feeling part of a place and being valued within it.
What struck us most was that people did not separate housing, health and community. They saw them as part of the same story.
We began to realise that supporting healthier, longer lives is not only about responding when people need care. It is about creating the conditions that help people stay well in the first place. Housing becomes more than accommodation; it becomes a platform for prevention, wellbeing and neighbourhood health.
As the Housing LIN community continues this conversation, we would love to connect with others exploring similar questions. By sharing learning, testing new approaches and building evidence together, we can help create places where people can live well, contribute and belong throughout their lives.
