Housing an Ageing Population - The Extra Care Solution

This report by Tim Brown, Principal Lecturer, De Montfort University commissioned by Keepmoat and the Housing LIN, outlines the challenges and opportunities for Extra Care housing against the backdrop of a continuing ageing population and cuts in public expenditure.

The report, aimed at housing authorities, providers and developers, highlights how lessons can be learned from abroad, with research from the Netherlands and USA placing a focus on "naturally occurring retirement communities" (NORCs),and the provision of multi-generational housing amid growing concerns over social exclusion of vulnerable households and the negative impact of retirement villages and gated communities.

It examines the effect of the Government's increasing focus on neighbourhoods and the significance of communities in the coalition Government's 'Big Society' plans.
