Homes For All: A collective manifesto to end the housing emergency for everyone in Wales

Homes for all Wales cover sml

This report, published by consortia lead Shelter Wales, provides startling facts and figures, including about the lack of specialist housing choices many older people experience and the poor quality of housing and its considerable impact on the health of older people to age well.

Housing LIN members with an interest in housing for an ageing population will note the following:

  • Shelter Cymru report that of the 94,000 people on the waiting list for social housing in Wales, 13,000 are older people waiting for sheltered housing.
  • Age Cymru’s national survey of people aged over 55 reveal 22% of older people said their home was in need of repair, and
  • Care & Repair Cymru highlight that improving the condition of housing in Wales has a significant health benefit. For example, it could reduce respiratory illnesses by up to 50%.

Commenting on the report, Jeremy Porteus, CEO of Housing LIN, said:

“As a member of the Welsh Government’s former Expert Group on Housing and an Ageing Population, chaired by Professor Judith Phillips - who along with me was on the more recent Older People’s Housing Taskforce in England too - reading this report through the lens of housing for older people, I was struck by the current housing emergency and some of the crisis that could have been prevented nearly a decade later.”
