Waltham House

Description of Scheme
Waltham House is a new and exciting extra care development, located in the heart of the pretty market town of Wirksworth, which is one of the oldest towns in the area and is still one of those with the greatest character. Centred around its marketplace, where markets have been held since Edward I granted the right in 1306, it has many fine old buildings, with picturesque alleys and craftsmens' yards.
Waltham House comprises 39 one and two bed apartments, with a mix of tenures, those being rent, shared ownership and outright sale. The old building itself is grade II listed and is being carefully restored to provide 5 of the 39 apartments, the remainder are being developed in the new building to the rear, formed around a central courtyard.
The development has been made possible through the close working partnership between Housing 21, Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council and the Wirksworth Care Centre Project.
Where Is It?
The town of Wirksworth is a maze of narrow streets and interesting alleyways, much admired by locals and visitors over the years.
The town stands virtually at the centre of Derbyshire, two miles from the Peak District National Park boundary and was an important part of the English lead mining industry when it was at its height. The mining in this area dates back to Roman times. Lead mining fell into decline towards the end of the 19th century.
The fine architectural buildings that make up the centre of Wirksworth were recognised in 1983 when the town received an international award for architectural conservation.
There are lots of interesting places to visit, including the Heritage Centre in Crown Yard and the Parish Church of St Mary, dating back to 653, which is situated at the junction of five ancient trackways.
There are a variety of local amenities and shops very close to the centrally located Waltham House, with good road and public transport links to Derby, Matlock and Bakewell.
