Vernon Gardens
Brighton, Southdown Housing Association

Description of Scheme

Vernon Gardens has been adapted to meet the needs of ten physically disabled adults- full wheelchair accessibility throughout.

Where Is It?

Conservation area of Edwardian and Victorian houses in central Brighton

Residents Information

For Samantha Lewis, who has severe mobility problems, moving into Vernon Gardens is a life-changing moment.

"I've been sharing my gran's flat for the last couple of years, but it was too small to move around in using my wheelchair and difficult to get out and about from.

This new flat is a dream come true. It means I can be more independent and come and go as I wish while having the support I need on site when I need it.

"I love cooking but it wasn't possible at my gran's, so having the new accessible, specially adapted kitchen is brilliant."

Relevant Local Strategy

Brighton & Hove recognises the important role that extra care housing has in meeting the needs of older people in the community. The development of this model of care is seen as a priority by the council and, following consultation, they have developed an Extra Care Housing Strategy [PDF 170kb], which sets out the steps that need to be taken to achieve service modernisation.

While recognising the need to develop extra care housing for older people, creating combined accommodation and care throughout the city requires detailed and long term planning.

Therefore, the strategy seeks to achieve an integrated approach to accommodation and care and is based on providing extra care housing as a mainstream resource in meeting the needs of older people - reducing the need for residential care, impacting on hospital admission and enabling the discharge of older people from acute hospital beds.
