Relevant Local Strategy
As the numbers/demand for Housing for Older People increases; and to seek to meet local and national drivers that are in place in relation to retaining independence for as long as possible it was thought that there was a need for developing a 2nd Extra Care Housing Scheme (Potteries Court). Prior to the opening if this scheme the first Extra Care Housing Scheme opened in 2006 (Oak Trees Resource Centre). This scheme is situated at Stag Lane, and falls in the Central part of the borough. This scheme is in the region of 8 miles away from Potteries Court.
It was therefore felt that the opening of Potteries Court in the North of the Borough would give customers whom live in this part the opportunity to live in Extra Care Housing and remain in the same area as their families and friends. Potteries Court replaced an existing sheltered scheme with low demand bed sits/small flats.
Useful Local Statistics
Based on data from the Office of National Statistics, the number of people aged over 55 years in Rotherham is expected to grow from 72,000 (in 2005) to 96,400 by 2025.
The significant projected increase indicates a related increase in the numbers of people with long term conditions.
