Handyside Court
Alvaston, Housing 21

Description of Scheme

This is Derby's first purpose built Extra Care Housing scheme.

Handyside Court has a generic client group although many people referred thus far have levels of dementia, learning disability, and intermediate care is delivered in people's own homes within the scheme.

The scheme is a hub for the local community, with events and activities being open to all nearby. Partnerships with NHS Derby City ensure that local health messages are communicated through the scheme and extended to the surrounding area. The restaurant and shop are marketed widely in the community to local residents. As the scheme progresses engagement with local people will inform development of activities and services on site.

Where Is It?

Located approx 3 miles from town centre, the surrounding area is predominantly social housing or sheltered housing for older people.

Relevant Local Strategy

Local strategic target is of 925 Extra Care units in Derby City by 2015. The location of this scheme is close to a new primary care centre and the area is a priority neighbourhood in terms of socio-economic disadvantage and health inequalities.

This has been a catalyst to look at the development of more ECH via re-development of sheltered housing stock, and also has been a key driver of the strategic review of council owned care homes locally. A project team is looking at development opportunities across the city to ensure a good spread and variety is achieved.
