Fitzwilliam Court
Hoyland, Guinness Northern Counties

Description of Scheme

The scheme is for older people over 55 years - there are no specially targeted groups, and it is expected that clients from all these groups will become residents, however it is envisaged that this scheme will be especially suitable for early onset dementia due to the planning of the accommodation layout on the lower ground floor and the provision of an additional bathroom, staff and sluice rooms.

The design seeks to take advantage of the topography and the views over the surrounding area. It uses modern materials and is energy efficient. All apartments will have access to broadband and will be wi fi enabled.

GNC has commissioned Barnsley Art College to hold a competition amongst its final year student to design an sculptural water feature for the main entrance.

In addition, the scheme:

  • is within Hoyland town centre so close to all amenities.
  • has no comparable accommodation nearby
  • delivers a building that meets the needs of an ageing population in Hoyland
  • recycling of an existing brownfield site will deliver accommodation and service needed in the community
  • a flexible and sustainable building solution that meets the strategic needs of the Authority and the community in the long term
  • flexible designed solution that enables a changing range of services to be delivered over time
  • provide services within the building to meet the current unmet needs of people with the early onset of dementia/cognitive impairment
  • The restaurant will be open for non residents
  • The assisted bathing adjacent to a separate lounge, this can be used as a day care facility should the need arise.
  • good links will been made with the local schools.

Where Is It?

The scheme site is exceptionally well located in the centre of Hoyland, a local town only 5 miles from Barnsley Town Centre. The site is adjacent to local bus routes, with good links to neighbourhood centres and 400m from Elsecar railway station with direct links to Leeds and Sheffield Mainline stations. The town centre serves Hoyland and its neighbouring villages, with local shops, a post office and markets within a short walking distance.

The Hoyland area has a high number of council rented properties and was previously a mining community. A lot of older people still live locally and present with a range of health issues. The Earl of Wentworth Estate (the Fitzwilliam family) is adjacent and the new scheme will have splendid views of that open space and countryside.
