Description of Scheme

This scheme in Malmesbury consists of 49 one and two bedroom apartments. The scheme not only provides services such as a Hair Salon, Craft/IT room etc. But of particular note is the provision of a residents 'work shed'. This will be designed to follow the 'Men in sheds' principle.

The Abbeyfield society has a very strong ethos of community engagement, and whilst this development doesn't have any commercial elements within it, it does contain a Hair Salon, Craft/Activity/IT room. They are engaging with a working group drawn from the local community to explore ways that they can integrate Burnham Road into the wider community.

 

Where Is It?

Malmesbury is a market town which lies to the south-west of the Cotswold Hills. According to the 2011 the population of Malmesbury was 5,380 persons residing in 2,280 dwellings.

The Burnham Road site is in a mixed residential area. Composing older period properties Victorian and older together with a number of 1950's ex council houses and bungalows.

Proximity

The main town lies about 800m from the development it has a range of shops including a pharmacist. The main GP surgery is located on the far side of the town about 2000m away.

As part of the range of services planned to be provided in the completed scheme, they hope to work with the GP surgery to provide an outreach service at Burnham Road.

Relevant Local Strategy

The planning framework relevant to the application site comprises National Planning Guidance in the form of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), saved policies of the North Wiltshire Local Plan (adopted June 2006), and the emerging Core Strategy. These plans identify the need to provide extra care housing to meet local need.

The scheme will be designed to be dementia friendly, through the use of items such as excellent light levels, great signage, and way finding techniques.

24/7 domiciliary care services available should it be needed.
