The Importance of Global Intergenerational Week for Housing

Today marks the end of Generations Working Together's #GIW25 (opens new window), a global awareness week advocating that the relationships between older and younger people are not just ‘nice’ but essential.
Intergenerational practice brings people of all ages together through meaningful, mutually beneficial activities that help to create understanding, respect, and stronger communities. It builds on the strengths of both younger and older people, creating inclusive connections. In housing and housing with care, this approach is especially valuable, helping to reduce isolation, improve community bonds, address workforce gaps, and support sustainable design.
We’re highlighting the following Inquiry, resources and events for #GIW25:
All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People Inquiry, focused on Creating Intergenerational Communities
Co-chaired by Lord Best and Anna Dixon MP, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People Inquiry focuses on creating mixed-age communities, both in mainstream and specialist housing.
Launched on 4 March 2025, the Housing LIN is proud to be the Inquiry Secretariat, and this ‘microsite’ provides background information about the Inquiry and will also provide regular news updates and progress reports on the year-long APPG Inquiry.
HAPPI Hour Webinar
Inspired by the recent launch of the year-long All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People Inquiry, focused on Creating Intergenerational Communities, we kick off the spring/summer series of HAPPI Hour webinars with a session on 'International and National perspectives on Intergenerational Living'.
Join us for FREE on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, from 4–5pm as we explore key policy developments and research from the UK and beyond. We’ll highlight inspiring housing and community initiatives that successfully bring generations together to create sustainable solutions for all ages and help to create stronger, more inclusive communities.

Scaling Intergenerational Impact Empower: One Year On - what are the learnings?
This #GIW25, we were pleased to share a new Housing LIN guest blog by Harriet Warden, Empower Programme Manager at InCommon, exploring the evolution and impact of Empower, InCommon’s innovative online platform designed to scale intergenerational projects between schools and retirement housing.
Since our evaluation - Bringing Generations Together: Unlocking Community Wellbeing with InCommon - a year ago, InCommon has expanded its reach, built new partnerships—especially within care homes—and refined its platform based on sector feedback. The blog highlights how Empower supports community building, combats loneliness, and helps facilitate emotional growth in children.
Housing LIN is proud to join the Intergenerational Housing Steering Group
We're also proud to be a member of Intergenerational England's Intergenerational Housing Steering Group, alongside leading housing organisations Clarion, Clarion Futures, HACT, and Sovereign Network Group. Recognising the growing importance of intergenerational initiatives across the housing sector, the collaboration aims to spearhead a transformative strategy for widespread acknowledgment and measurement of the tangible impact and benefits.
