Call for evidence from APPG Inquiry into Creating Intergenerational Communities

Earlier this year, the APPG on Housing and Care for Older People launched an Inquiry into ‘Creating Intergenerational Communities’ to explore how housing can bring people of all ages together. To date, three sessions have gathered insights from practitioners and residents with first-hand experience of building such communities.
The Inquiry is now at a mid-point, and we are issuing a call for evidence to those interested in contributing ideas and evidence.
CALL FOR EVIDENCE
The Inquiry is seeking evidence from those with experience of creating or living in intentional intergenerational communities.
We are particularly interested in hearing about the different ways in which housing can successfully bring generations together, the design features that make this possible, the benefits for residents and wider communities, and the challenges or barriers that need to be addressed. Your insights will help shape practical recommendations for policymakers, housing providers, and developers on how to create more inclusive, intergenerational places across the UK.

ABOUT THE INQUIRY
Co-chaired by Lord Best and Anna Dixon MP, this All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People (APPG) Inquiry - funded by Places for People and the Riverside Group - is focusing on creating mixed-age communities, both in mainstream and specialist housing.
It seeks:
- to understand how to improve the intergenerational experience of older people, based on where they live and their surroundings.
- to explore what good looks like for new developments (public and private) which create intergenerational communities for enhanced health and wellbeing for older people.
- to use the lessons learned to inform new housing development and placemaking not least in New Towns and on Grey Belt land.
- to make recommendations to government; Homes England; Greater London Authority; regional and local authorities/planning authorities; the National Health Service; investors; designers; developers; and housing, health and social care providers.
Launched on 4 March 2025, the Housing LIN is proud to be the Inquiry Secretariat.
