Our Chief Executive, Jeremy Porteus, was honoured to be a keynote speaker at the Almshouse Association Members Day conference in Westminster on Thursday. In his presentation, he highlighted the social value and financial benefits of high-quality housing for older people, drawing on Housing LIN research into the vital role almshouses play within local health and care systems.

The London event also celebrated several almshouse societies and charities, recognising both new-build and refurbished projects, as well as enhancements to the built environment, including garden improvements.

Two award-winning schemes are of particular interest to the Housing LIN. The first is Girton Town Charity’s Dovehouse Court almshouse, designed by Mole Architects in Cambridgeshire, which was featured in this week’s HAPPI Hour and will be the focus of an upcoming Housing LIN case study. The second is United St Saviour’s Appleby Blue, designed by Witherford Watson Mann Architects in Bermondsey (a Housing LIN Inspirational Achievement and the overall winner), adding to the collection of awards for this innovative almshouse in Southwark, London.
