Proud to work in Housing

What an experience and a privilege it has been to have been part of and supported the Housing LIN future leaders programme over the last year. Working with Jeremy, Alice, the Housing LIN team, Sarah and the whole Future Leaders cohort has been one of my favourite parts of the last year.  If you speak to colleagues or are thinking of taking part then seize it!

I'm also delighted that SNG have supported the programme which demonstrates our commitment to developing leaders across the housing sector.

I’m proud to work in housing, it's a fascinating and rewarding career. Now looking back and having worked in housing and communities for nearly 20 years and spending my childhood living in multiple Council houses I feel a real affinity to work in an industry that gave a home to my parents and siblings.

This Future Leaders programme is different. It is not academic or based on management theory. It is stacked by talks from so many inspiring leaders. Each speaker was insightful but they all shared a humility and vulnerability and a sense that they got where they are through the support from others. This rang true to me. During my housing career my team, my peers, my managers and leaders and colleagues in the sector have been vital to supporting me and helping me to fully enjoy and embrace my role.

One takeaway from Louise Cannon who has worked in housing and social enterprise was her openness about her personal experiences and how you can decide to be the leader you want to be and need to continually reflect on your leadership style and the impact you can have on others. 

Another highlight was the visit to Appleby Blue an award-winning almshouse in Bermondsey that is designed to encourage connection and wellbeing for residents. Speaking to inspiring people in an inspiring venue was a truly memorable day. So do apply, make the most of working in a sector where we can make a difference to people's lives every day.
