What's in a home? Bridging generational divides through housing
This Churchill Fellowship blog by their 2024 Fellow, Savannah Fishel, outlines aims for her opportunity to visit housing innovations abroad which put intergenerational connectedness at the centre of their design.
Building on what Savannah has seen of the importance of interpersonal connection and social cohesion in her work in the UK to tackle complex challenges such as digital exclusion and frequent A&E attendance, the Churchill Fellowship, a UK charity which supports individual UK citizens to follow their passion for change through learning from the world and bringing that knowledge back to the UK, will enable Savannah to visit housing innovations abroad that are intentionally intergenerational and accessible for people from marginalised and low-income backgrounds, putting connectedness at the heart of their design.
This blog outlines how her Fellowship will explore what it takes to create thriving and truly communal intergenerational communities in practice and also invites others from the UK, US, and beyond to discuss this important topic and collaborate on opportunities that will bring generations together to create resilient communities.
If this is of interest, you can also read a report by Gita Prasad, an earlier recipient of the Churchill Fellowship, on communal and intergenerational living in the Netherlands and Denmark, here.
We look forward to following Savannah on her Travelling Fellowship journey and hearing an update on her progress in one of our autumn/winter HAPPI Hour webinars later this year. Details to follow.
