Rethinking public space design for people with visual disabilities: Towards an inclusive urban environment
This Italian study investigates the perception of people with visual disabilities and how multisensory components enhance the inclusivity of environments.
The Science Direct online article, from an "Inclusive Cities" special issue of Cities: The International Journal of Urban Policy and Planning, highlights design solutions that improve the usability of spaces. It finds that disabled people must be considered as decision-makers, especially in architecture, and that by designing inclusively, it improves the living conditions of people with disabilities.
In particular, it provides critical thinking on how public space is designed for people with visual disabilities exploring how cities and public environments can become more navigable through clearer wayfinding, multisensory design, improved spatial planning and reduced environmental confusion.
