INGENIOUS Insight: Understanding air pollution in homes
The insight report captures the findings from the INGENIOUS project (Understanding the sources, transformations, and fates of Indoor air pollutants). It shares a better understanding of air pollution in our homes, which will benefit public health for years to come.
Researchers monitored more than 300 homes in Bradford to understand how cooking, cleaning, heating, ventilation, housing conditions, and lifestyle habits affect indoor air quality. The study found that indoor air can sometimes be more polluted than outdoor air, especially in poorly ventilated or lower-income households. Cooking emissions, gas stoves, smoking, and airtight homes increased pollution levels.
The report also offers practical recommendations, such as improving ventilation, using extractor fans, and reducing spray cleaners, while highlighting the need for stronger UK indoor air quality policies.
