Disability and Housing in Ireland - Data Insight Series

This resource by The Housing Agency [HSE] in Ireland explores the intersection between disability and housing in Ireland using the most recent data. As a group, disabled people are vulnerable to housing insecurity. In Ireland, understanding and addressing the experiences and challenges of disabled people in relation to housing has become an increasingly important focus.

With the number of people recorded as disabled in Ireland rising to 21.5% of the population reporting having a long-lasting difficulty or condition in 2022, there has been an active drive on behalf of the Irish government and the HSE to encourage disabled people to apply for social housing support which may point to the increase in disability as a basis of need on the social housing waiting list. And, along with an increasingly ageing population, the resource examines 5 themes, providing useful information and findings on:

1. Definitions of disability-related terminology.
2. Demographics related to disabled people in Ireland including prevalence, type of disability and household type.
3. Housing cost overburden for disabled people in Ireland compared to the European Union (EU).
4. Households qualified for social housing with disability as a main basis of need.
5. The prevalence of homelessness among disabled people in Ireland.
