Design Guide - Space for Wellbeing

Design Guide - Space for Wellbeing COVER

Based on Belgian research by HOUSE – on ageing well in the right place – this guide questions how can we design homes that truly contribute to the wellbeing of (future) older adults?

Translated into English, it proposes a shared language and a set of design drivers for architects, designers, housing professionals, researchers and policymakers working on housing and ageing to address quality of housing and the wellbeing of residents.

The five proposed design drivers for designing housing with wellbeing are:

  • Space for the diversity of older adults
  • Space for change
  • Space for memories
  • Space for independence & routines
  • Space for social interaction

Accompanying the guide is a toolbox providing designers with practical tools to engage with residents, clients, and colleagues, and to gather insights that strengthen the design.
