Cohousing and the role of intermediaries in later life transitions

This free article in the Journal of Age and Society draws on research from the CHIC project to explore how mutual support among residents in collaborative housing for older people presents an alternative care model to family or formal social care provided in individuals’ homes or specialised care facilities.
The authors explore the role that housing communities play in supporting later-life transitions, especially where that involves a decline in physical health leading to a higher need for care and support. It finds that the ‘intentional’ commitment to mutual support in cohousing contributes significantly to extending agency in later life.
