Building for a Healthy Life
Homes England have further updated (May 2026) its Building for a Healthy life [BHL] design guidance toolkit for neighbourhoods, streets, homes and public spaces to support secure design and placemaking quality across development it supports.
Adopting a ‘traffic lights’ rating system, the toolkit now makes reference to what good looks like, including in relation to downsizers, specialist and supported living. It also recognises the importance of the built environment in enabling older people to stay connected to everyday life.
Lastly, building on the original 2020 guidance – heavily influenced by the then Healthy New Towns Programme led by NHS England - this edition continues to be informed by the 12 BHL design considerations when planning and building neighbourhoods, looking at public infrastructure of the built environment including transport, streetscaping and green space such as parks.
