Building for a Healthy Life

Building for a Healthy Life (BHL) is the latest edition of - and new name for - Building for Life 12. The new name reflects recent changes in legislation and BHL also recognises the findings of the three-year Healthy New Towns Programme led by NHS England and NHS Improvement.

The updated document sets out 12 design considerations when planning and building neighbourhoods, looking at public infrastructure of the built environment including transport, streetscaping and green space such as parks. While there is no direct reference to age-friendly design or disabled access, BHL does implicitly recognise the need for an inclusive approach to creating a healthy environment.
