A London manifesto for housing in later life
A YouGov report commissioned by McCarthy & Stone More reveals that more than four in ten Londoners aged 55 and over believe there is a lack of suitable accommodation in the capital to downsize to. The retirement housebuilder said that 43% of respondents felt this way, but 32% were either currently considering downsizing or contemplating it for the future. In advance of the London mayoral elections, it has made a number of specific policy recommendations to boost retirement housing supply in the capital. They include:
- Developing stronger London-wide and local planning policies across the 32 boroughs to support retirement homes delivery across all tenures
- Giving retirement housing equivalent status to affordable housing to help provision and encourage new entrants into the sector
- Requiring local authorities to identify suitable sites for retirement housing in local plans
