Three years, no action: 375,000 new homes still built to inadequate accessibility standards

Today marks the third anniversary of the government’s pledge to ensure all new homes meet at least the Accessible and Adaptable standard, yet no regulatory changes have been made to turn this commitment into action.

In that time, over 375,000 new homes have been constructed to the current inadequate minimum standard. These homes are harder and more expensive to adapt, and risk placing unnecessary strain on health and social care services as residents age or face mobility challenges.

As proud members of the Housing Made for Everyone (HoME) coalition, we are calling for urgent policy reform. Every new home should be designed to support people at every stage of life, ensuring comfort, independence, and dignity for all.
