As we step into 2026, our focus is on creating homes and communities that are inclusive, resilient and future-ready. From accessible housing and intergenerational living, to healthier neighbourhoods, digital readiness, and better supported housing, our 5 top priorities highlight where action matters most.

Priority No 2. Increase the supply of intergenerational homes and communities

The Housing LIN is proud to be the Secretariat to the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Housing and Care for Older People Inquiry on ‘Creating Intergenerational Communities’. Cochaired by Lord Best and Anna Dixon MP, the APPG’s Inquiry report will emphasise the benefits of locating designated housing for older people in neighbourhoods where intergenerational connections can flourish or integrating a greater mix of ages and/or intergenerational activities in specialist accommodation such as sheltered housing, extra care housing or retirement villages.

And with the Social and Affordable Housing Programme committing £39bn to a decade of planned housing growth, we want to see that the 2026-2036 capital programme delivers a significant supply of attractive, age-inclusive mainstream homes and purpose-built, accessible older people’s housing that can generate the spread of naturally occurring intergenerational communities and create greater connections across generations at a scheme level.

We invite housing providers, local authorities and community leaders to work with us to turn these ambitions into practical solutions that improve lives.

The APPG report will be published in March 2026. Look out for further details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the Inquiry webpages can be found here

Lastly, building on the HAPPI and TAPPI principles, each of our top 5 priority themes for 2026 is also shaped by the core areas that will form a fundamental part of our Vivensa Foundation-funded SHAPE Exchange programme over the next 5 years. More details will be out soon to coincide with our annual conferences in Newcastle and Bristol.
