We are pleased to share our latest contribution to our Disability Discrimination Act series, ahead of its 30th anniversary, by Sir David Pearson, Independent Chair and Advisor.

This blog explores the vital role of appropriate housing in ensuring equality, independence, and inclusion for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. It highlights the ongoing crisis of over 2,000 individuals still living in hospital settings due to a lack of suitable community housing. Through examples like supported housing and HOLD mortgages, the blog shows how personalised homes can transform lives, enabling independence, employment, and connection.

David calls for stronger government action and collaboration to expand accessible housing, stressing that adapted homes are not special provisions but essential foundations of an equal society where everyone has the right to live with dignity and choice.
