New Housing LIN Viewpoint sets out a typology-based approach to specialist housing forecasting

In this Housing LIN Viewpoint (No.119), Dr Ngozi Fakeye and Sukh Singh of Wokingham Borough Council argue that the biggest barrier to effective specialist accommodation planning is not poor coordination, but the lack of a common language between housing and social care.

The authors set out how a typology-based framework - categorising accommodation into defined types linked to specific cohorts and support needs - enables more accurate demand forecasting and a shared evidence base. It also highlights Wokingham's design specification handbook, covering seven accommodation types, as a practical example of typology-led market shaping.

The Viewpoint comes at a particularly timely point, with the Housing LIN also working with Wokingham Borough Council on its supported housing strategy and preparations in response to the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act (SHROA).
