New Housing LIN Viewpoint introduces the concept of ‘neighbourisms’ in intergenerational living environments

We are pleased to share our newest Viewpoint (no. 111) by Savannah Fishel who shares insights from her Churchill Fellowship research into 54 communal housing models, arguing that loneliness is a public health crisis requiring a preventative, community-based approach.

She introduces "neighbourisms", everyday acts of mutual support in intergenerational living, which reduce isolation and improve health outcomes.

Savannah also spoke at yesterday’s APPG for Housing and Care for Older People inquiry into intergenerational living at the House of Lords, London, during our second session. The session focused on integrating different age groups within the same housing developments, including in New Towns and major public sector regeneration projects. Savannah contributed by advocating for policy change that recognises social connection as essential infrastructure, vital for building resilient, connected communities that support wellbeing across generations.
