New Housing LIN Case Study reinterprets the almshouse for later life at Ossulton Court in Uxbridge
As part of this year's Accessible Homes Week, we are pleased to bring you this new Housing LIN Case Study (No. 183), in which Stephen Melvin, Principal at Atelier Architecture & Design, explores Ossulton Court, a contemporary almshouse development of 30 apartments in Uxbridge, west London, and winner of the Almshouse Association Inspirational Homes Award in 2025.
Combining the social principles of the almshouse with HAPPI-informed design, the scheme arranges accessible, dual-aspect homes around a landscaped courtyard and sheltered cloister, showing how later-life housing can support independence while creating everyday opportunities for community.
Stephen explains how the site’s inherited character, between the River Fray and the inner ring road, became part of the architectural response.
