NICE Guideline - COVID-19 rapid guideline: critical care in adults

This NICE guideline; designed for health and care practitioners, and staff involved in planning, delivering and commissioning services; outlines the protocols intended to protect the safety of patients that need critical care during the outbreak. It also highlights how staff can be protected from catching the virus.

The guidance contains information and protocol on:

  • Admission to hospital - all adults admitted to hospital should be assessed for frailty regardless of whether they have Coronavirus, and where Covid-positive patients are identified to follow the government's infection prevention and control measures
  • Admission to critical care - the risks, benefits and possible outcomes of different treatments should be discussed with the patients, their families and carers
  • Starting, reviewing and stopping critical care treatment - Critical care treatment should be regularly reviewed when the patient's clinical condition changes
