Housing LIN supports World Mental Health Day 2025

We are proud to support World Mental Health Day 2025, highlighting the importance of mental health and well-being for older adults and the role housing plays in promoting a healthy, connected life.
Good quality, safe, and supportive housing is a cornerstone of mental health for older people. This World Mental Health Day (opens new window), led by the Mental Health Foundation, we are shining a spotlight on how housing solutions, such as specialist older people’s housing, extra care housing, and community support, can positively influence mental health outcomes. By integrating mental health awareness into housing design and services, we can help older adults live independently, stay socially connected, and access the support they need.
On our mental health and housing webpages, you'll find published research, analysis, and guidance to support this work. For example:
- Learn about how the TAPPI (Technology for our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation) project is closely linked to mental health, particularly in how housing and technology can enhance well-being for older adults.
- Read our It’s in our DNA Housing LIN guest blog by Faye Sanders, Doctoral Researcher at the University of Bath, explores how poor housing quality can impact mental health through biological pathways such as DNA methylation.
- We also highlight sector reports like Mind the Age Gap: Making Mental Health Matter Across the Life Course, published by the International Longevity Centre (ILC), which shows that older people are less likely to seek support for mental health due to stigma and generational taboos, with internalised ageism adversely affecting psychological well-being.
