Learning Disability Week (opens new window), led by Mencap, is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions, achievements and experiences of people with a learning disability, while challenging the barriers that prevent people from being seen, heard and valued.

This year’s theme, Do You See Me?, highlights the importance of visibility, inclusion and recognising people as individuals with aspirations, rights and choices.

Housing plays a fundamental role in supporting people with a learning disability to live independently, participate in their communities and lead fulfilling lives. Having access to the right home, in the right place, with the right support can help people exercise greater choice and control over their lives. As the housing, health and care sectors continue to work together to improve outcomes, it is vital that the housing needs and voices of people with a learning disability remain visible and central to planning and delivery.

We are pleased to highlight a selection of resources and initiatives that support greater understanding of the housing needs of people with a learning disability and promote more inclusive housing choices.

‘Do You See Me?’ – How visible are my housing needs?

Aligned with this year’s Learning Disability Week theme, this Housing LIN blog, written by Gary Bourlet, Membership and Engagement Lead and co-founder, and Sam Clark, Chief Executive at Learning Disability England, explores the importance of recognising and responding to the housing aspirations and needs of people with a learning disability. The blog highlights why visibility matters and calls for greater awareness of the role that housing plays in enabling independence, choice and inclusion.

Supported Housing Review and Oversight Assessment (SHROA)

The Supported Housing Review and Oversight Assessment (SHROA) programme supports local authorities and partners to better understand, review and improve supported housing provision. The resource provides practical guidance and tools to help ensure supported housing delivers good outcomes for residents, including people with learning disabilities and autistic people, while supporting strategic planning and oversight across local areas.

The Housing LIN’s Research and Advisory team provides a range of services to help local authorities and their partners prepare for the implementation of SHROA. This includes working collaboratively with councils and stakeholders. Find out how we can help you here.
