Celebrating International Day of Older Persons 2025

This October 1st, we join the global community in observing the United Nations' International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), themed: “Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections”. This theme highlights the vital role that older people play in shaping both local communities and the broader world, emphasising their right to live with dignity, independence, and active participation.
In the UK, ensuring that older adults have access to suitable housing is fundamental to supporting their aspirations and well-being. At Housing LIN, we are committed to advancing this cause through our comprehensive resources on housing for older people. Our dedicated webpages provide valuable information and guidance on creating age-friendly living environments that promote independence and community engagement.
To coincide with IDOP, Jeremy Porteus, CEO of Housing LIN, attended an exclusive Cheltenham event hosted by HCR Law. The roundtable explored the evolving strategy and future of older persons’ housing in England. He was joined by Professor Julienne Meyer CBE, Executive Director of Care for Older People and Chair of the Government’s Older People’s Housing Taskforce, who shared updates since the taskforce report and future perspectives. Discussions focused on the benefits of a new Housing Strategy, integrating healthcare with housing, and empowering older people to shape their communities.
As we celebrate today, we reflect on the importance of inclusive housing solutions that empower older people to live fulfilling lives. We encourage everyone to explore our resources and consider how we can collectively contribute to building a society that values and supports its older members.
