Supporting the Independence of Older People: Are Councils Doing Enough?

This report from the Wales Audit Office examines whether councils are working effectively to support the independence of older people.

It concludes that whilst the Welsh public sector recognises the challenges of an ageing population, some key barriers are inhibiting the shift in focus that is needed to reduce demand for health and social care services and support older people to live independently.

On the housing for older people front, it highlights that access to, and availability of, housing and housing based support services for older people has reduced in recent years.

In addition, it found that only three councils directly provide extra care housing and 11 councils directly manage sheltered and elderly designated accommodation.
