POLICY AND PRACTICE

Generation Stuck: Exploring the Reality of Downsizing in Later Life

This report by ILC-UK, commissioned by McCarthy and Stone, explores older peoples' attitudes towards moving, the pros and cons of downsizing and provides evidence to help inform the public debate about the role of housing stock held by older people. While the demand for downsizing options is substantial, the report found there is still work to be done with raising awareness around the merits of downsizing, from releasing equity to improving physical wellbeing.

EXTERNAL EVENT SUPPORTED BY THE HOUSING LIN

LGA Housing Commission events

As reported in our weekly bulletin on 17 December, the Local Government Association has launched a Housing Commission to explore new routes to house building so councils can enable the building of more desperately-needed homes. One of the areas of interest is health and quality of life for an ageing population - the role of housing in adapting to an ageing population and preventing onward costs onto social care and health services. To aid the work of the Commission, the LGA are holding 4 information gathering seminars on:

  • Housebuilding (outside the HRA) - 27 January in Eastleigh
  • Place making, planning and growth - 24 February in Wakefield
  • Employment - 16 March in London
  • Health and ageing - 27 April in Aylesbury
