NEW HOUSING LIN CASE STUDY

Woodchester Valley Village: How we turned a disaster into the first mutually owned retirement village (opens new window)

To coincide with #RuralHousingWeek, this case study looks at the important issues affecting the development and management of leasehold retirement housing in the UK and captures the story of the residents at Woodchester Valley Village near Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, who have experienced the best of living in a retirement village by taking managing control of the site when their developer/owner went into receivership. It is adapted from a presentation given at a CARLEX/Leasehold Knowledge Partnership meeting and covers the key issues affecting this fledgling sector given, in particular, the total unsuitability of current leasehold law and the limited rights some people have when they buy a retirement home.

NEW HOUSING LIN BRIEFING

Closing the health gap - a gap worth closing: How housing can play its part in reducing health inequalities (opens new window)

This briefing equips housing, care and support practitioners, and public health teams, with ideas about practical actions they can take to reduce health inequalities. Supported by Public Health England, it draws attention to key measures to remove or reduce the impact of factors that make people ill, such as cold homes and fuel poverty, as well as approaches to increasing the potential for individuals and communities to improve their own health, by taking control of their lives and building confidence and resilience.

And finally, it provides links to resources to enable housing providers to better engage with the health sector and to measure changes in health inequalities over time, at the local level.

HAPPI AWARDS ANNOUNCED
