LINks - the Housing LIN's essential weekly bulletin (19 May)

This week is Dementia Awareness Week. The Housing LIN is committed to raising awareness of the sector's potential and actual contribution to supporting those living with dementia. We mark this week by highlighting a number of blogs and publications.

Dementia Feature

In her blog, April Dobson, Abbeyfield's dementia advisor describes Abbeyfield's initiative for this year's Dementia Awareness Week called "Great Minds".

April describes it as "a series of moving, insightful and inspiring films, broadcasts and presentations which will be streamed on our website throughout Dementia Awareness Week. Some of the nation's leading dementia care professionals and people living with the condition are taking part and will be speaking candidly about the effects the brain disease can have upon people, their family and friends, and champion the need for better understanding and engagement."

These include, amongst others, Keith Oliver, an inspirational person with dementia; Professor Dawn Brooker from the Association of Dementia Studies; Ruth Eley of the Life Story Network; and Sue Garwood, the Housing LIN dementia Lead, each from a different perspective explained in the blog.

Sue Garwood has also written a blog and 'at-a-glance' briefing on the long-awaited report and draft bill from the Law Commission on amendments to the Mental Capacity Act and deprivation of liberty.

39 Essex Street has also published a report which summarises the key points and includes a commentary from various perspectives.

Also, to mark Dementia Awareness Week, the Dementia Action Alliance and Alzheimer's Society have published a new set of Dementia Statements to replace the original "I statements".

The new statements were developed with people living with dementia. Grounded in human rights law, they are a rallying call to all of us to improve the lives of people with dementia and to recognise that they shouldn't be treated differently because of their diagnosis.

And last but not least, in this important week, a reminder to housing organisations to sign up to some of the commitments contained in the recently launched Dementia-friendly housing charter.

Published by the Alzheimer's Society, this is a live document and the Society welcomes your comments and thoughts.
