HAPPI National Housing Design Awards
HAPPI inspired specialised housing schemes were recognised as best in their class in the 2014 Housing Design Awards, held at the London School of Economics, London. Such was the response this year, with over 30 applications received for the HAPPI category alone, that two HAPPI prizes were given out at the awards ceremony - one for best completed scheme and the other for the best conceptual design.
- Pilgrim Gardens, Leicester - Completed scheme HAPPI winner
Supported by the Housing LIN for the first time, top honours for the best completed scheme in 2014 went to Pilgrim Gardens, a 31 unit scheme of independent living for older people in Evington, Leicester. Designed by PRP Architects for Pilgrim Homes, and constructed by contractors Keepmoat, the award winning scheme offers dual aspect apartments accessed via sheltered colonnades at the ground floor and gallery access at first floor, wrapped around a courtyard with constant views outside to aid orientation. The apartments were designed to avoid north facing habitable rooms and feature balconies with sliding, folding winter gardens to enable year round use, something that the residents say they really enjoy. The award for the best conceptual scheme in 2014 went to Bell Philips Architects for their proposed bungalow living scheme at Ravens Way in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Disguised as two-storey dwellings owing to contact in London surrounded by 2 to 4 storey buildings, this is a template for building unique wheelchair accessible houses on 6 of 8 garage sites planned for redevelopment for people with a need for level access homes across Greenwich.
