00:23:36 Rose Gilroy: Hi everyone, good to `see` you. I have Covid- ah what joy 00:24:48 Jerome Billeter | Housing LIN: Hi Rose - Thank you for joining us! Hope you get better soon 00:25:57 Sue Weston: Hi everyone, Sue Weston here from down in West Sussex. Great that HAPPI hours have returned! 00:26:34 Rose Gilroy: Thanks Jerome, very poor timing on my part. its induction week here at Newcastle uni!! 00:33:19 Rose Gilroy: ouch please don't use the word elderly-it is othering! 00:33:52 liz ormerod: Yes, older people cf elderly 00:35:31 Naomi: a lot of older people want to age at home within their community 00:35:44 Naomi: how do you approach this challenge? 00:36:52 Rose Gilroy: quite agree- recent research suggests 80% prefer to age in place- are we not guilty of lumping all older people together. 00:37:35 Sally Taylor-Ridgway | Housing LIN: As referred to by Millie, the Housing for an ageing population report can be found here: https://www.cushmanwakefield.com/en/united-kingdom/insights/housing-for-an-ageing-population 00:38:03 Sophia.Stevens: Agree - it seems at odds with the positive reports of intergenerational housing projects. 00:38:08 Sandra Newport: Millie, I live in a rural coastal community Any family homes released by elderly moving into more approp. accommodation for them will be snapped up as 2nd homes/ holiday homes 00:40:16 Sue Weston: surely there needs to be a better balance and more choice for people to move into specialised housing if they want / need it. nobody is saying everyone has to move to retirement - we just need more of it to bring us closer to the percentages available in other countries? 00:41:14 Andy: Too much emphasis is placed on IRC's. They are great but not the solution in themselves. IRC's and Retirement Communities should be promoted equally. Retirement Communities often provide a supported environment at a much more affordable price point. 00:41:42 Rose Gilroy: ok but we need a much better diversity of offer- what about co-housing that might be senior or inter generational 00:42:15 Andy: I agree. 00:46:58 Sue Weston: good to see 2 West Sussex up to date L Plans on the list! 00:49:16 Rose Gilroy: If we want to make this work we need to tackle both sides. Yes a greater diversity of units but to contribute to great affordability etc for other life course groups we need, as Sandra has said in her comments, to stop these being eaten up by Airbnb and second homes. 00:51:35 Judith Harries - National L'Arche - Housing Quality & Developmen: what is C2 and C3 housing? 00:53:35 Jerome Billeter | Housing LIN: For more info about C2 C3, I'd recommend you read https://www.housinglin.org.uk/_assets/Resources/Housing/Support_materials/Viewpoints/Viewpoint_20_Planning_Use_Classes.pdf 00:54:49 Rose Gilroy: oh hello little one 00:55:44 JGardner: 🏴‍☠️ 00:56:17 Rose Gilroy: ooh yes forgot the pirate 00:57:27 Sally Taylor-Ridgway | Housing LIN: You may also be interested in this Design for Life Guide: Urban practices for an age-friendly city by speaker, Mark Hammond: https://www.housinglin.org.uk/_assets/Resources/Housing/OtherOrganisation/A-Design-For-Life-Urban-practices-for-an-age-friendly-city-eBook.pdf 01:00:23 Rose Gilroy: oh yes in university cities the centre is about youth and youth consumption 01:00:53 liz ormerod: Great idea - many younger people also have disabilities and having age-friendly features would help them too. 01:02:28 Rose Gilroy: absolutely-much of our thinking about life course groups is seriously limited with no recognition of diversity 01:02:37 Guy Harris: Thanks, Mark. Good to hear you talking about building resilience into communities and integrating people into communities rather than institutionalising people. 01:03:50 Barbara: Totally agree - age segregation feels very unhealthy for all of us! 01:05:45 Rose Gilroy: don't disagree at all 01:06:08 Jan Taranczuk: As the stats show that older people with mobility impairments are more likely to die in a fire than the younger population, it would make sense to install fire suppression system (like the one made by Plumis) into each home 01:09:55 Sandra Newport: Local Development Planning doesn't involve distribution of health and social care facilities? 01:10:33 Zach: Great work, Mark and team. Does the Guidance include any consideration of ageing in relation to intersecting characteristics e.g. gender, race etc.? Thanks. 01:11:45 Judith Harries - National L'Arche - Housing Quality & Developmen: I'm interested in housing for people with learning disabilities who are getting older and physically less able. 01:14:11 liz ormerod: And does the Guidance address the need for older people to keep their animal companions - which provide social support, mitigate against loneliness & depression and improve cardiovascular function, amongst many other documented benefits? If you wish more information pls email me at Elizabeth.ormerod@btinternet.com and check our website www.scas.org.uk 01:22:46 Mark Hammond: Thanks all, apologies for my 2 unruly research assistants! 01:23:03 Sarah Thorneycroft: Many thanks 01:23:06 f.sadler: Thank you really interesting 01:23:09 Sue Weston: thank you for a great session 01:23:19 MariaK: Thank you, very interesting. 01:23:26 Sally Taylor-Ridgway | Housing LIN: Thank you for attending the first HAPPI Hour webinar of the Autumn/Winter series!
