Directory of Department of Health funded extra care schemes - knowledge & information exchange

DH logo emailWe are pleased to draw to your attention to the first wave of Care & Support Specialised Housing (CASSH) Fund schemes that have been uploaded on our online directory of DH funded schemes.

Focus on... Health and social benefits of co-located primary care services and extra care housing

Community Health Partnerships logoIn 2009, the Housing LIN published a case study (no.47) on Mill Rise Extra Care Housing Village in Staffordshire. Managed by Aspire, its an innovative partnership with the then PCT to establish an integrated facility with the Millhouse Primary Care Centre. Six years since it opened, Community Health Partnerships have produced a short paper outlining the health and social benefits of co-located primary care services and extra care housing.

This and our original case study can be found at: http://www.housinglin.org.uk/Topics/browse/HousingExtraCare/ExtraCareStrategy/HousingStrategyExamples/?&msg=0&parent=975&child=6240

Call for information: Older people, alcohol and housing

We are writing a briefing for members on older people and alcohol, and how to support older people who have alcohol problems to remain in their homes. We are looking for case studies of schemes that offer tenancies and access to treatment/support to older people who have problems with alcohol in mainstream and/or specialist housing. If you have an example you can share for inclusion in the briefing, please send information and a contact email to alison.s.giles@gmail.com by Monday, 14 September 2015.

Dementia in Western Europe: epidemiological evidence and implications for policy making

Lancet logoThis article from The Lancet published on 21 August 2015, reports on an evidence review into whether the occurrence of dementia has changed during the past 20-30 years in Western Europe. Drawing on key research studies across 5 countries, the findings show non-significant changes in overall dementia occurrence in the countries investigated. However, the only significant reduction in overall prevalence was found in the study done in the UK. Overall, it cites that reductions could be the outcomes from earlier population-level investments such as improved education and living conditions, and points to better upstream primary prevention as having the largest effect on reduction of later dementia occurrence and disability.
