LINks - this week's Housing LIN bulletin (w/c 24 August)

Welcome to LINks, the weekly e-bulletin from the Housing LIN (Learning and Improvement Network) where we put a selection of latest information, resources and events under the spotlight. In this week's issue, we would like to draw your attention to the following

New Housing LIN viewpoint - Bricks, Mortar and Policy Perspectives for Intergenerational Living

Email viewpoint 74This viewpoint for the Housing LIN, by Simca Simpson, Research Coordinator, Home Renaissance Foundation, is based on research published in "Bricks and Mortar Across Generations: A Think Piece on Intergenerational Living in the United Kingdom" in March 2015, and presented before the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People in July 2015. In particular, it:

  • reveals that increasing life-expectancy and rising house prices as key drivers behind the rise in intergenerational living and reveals that for the so-called 'boomerang generation' (younger people who return to live with parents) intergenerational living is showing signs of becoming normalised; no longer a sign of failing to live up to the dream of independent living, and
  • explores the contours of policy and practice surrounding homes where two or more adult generations live under the same roof

And finally, it presents the findings of interviews with policymakers, practitioners and thought leaders, and calls for a Commission on Intergenerational Housing. Read at: http://www.housinglin.org.uk/IntergenerationalLiving_Viewpoint

Social care: Announcement delaying introduction of funding reform

HOUSE OF COMMONS LOGOThis briefing from the House of Commons library explains the delay to the Care Act 2014 funding reform and other changes until April 2020 in England. This delay included the introduction of the cap that was intended to limit the liability of those self-funding their social care, and also the more generous means-test that would have allowed more people to qualify for local authority financial support towards the cost of their care.

In addition, the Government has also postponed the introduction of local authority "brokering" on behalf of self-funders (until April 2020) and the new appeals system, both of which were also due to come into effect in April 2016.
